Abstract

This case study looks at technology strategy and project management at the London Stock Exchange (LSE) from 1986 to summer 2000. It describes the LSE's competitive international business environment, and traces the business impacts of their technology strategy and project management. During this period the LSE attempted two separate computer systems to handle settlement of trading transactions. One, TAURUS, was a well- publicised technical failure setting the business back many years. The other, CREST, was very successful in technical terms, but the loss of leadership from TAURUS and other business strategy issues still left the LSE in an exposed position. The case chronicles these events.
