Abstract
Naguib Sawiris, Chairman of Orascom Telecom, had successfully expanded his firm, making it a regional leader in mobile phones, fixed payphones, and satellite communications. Joining forces with France Telecom and with Motorola, Orascom Telecom was positioned to revolutionise wireless communications in Egypt. As well, Orascom became the largest shareholder in Jordan''s Fastlink - the first GSM licensee in the kingdom. Furthermore, Orascom was selected to build and operate a GSM network for Syria, in a joint venture with Siemens. Although Orascom claimed that one of its strategic imperatives was to partner with the best in the industry, the Egyptian firm was not actively engaged with its high-tech neighbour, Israel. A member of a high-profile, official delegation from Singapore commented during a visit to the Middle East, ''Wouldn''t there be much gain if Orascom would co-operate with a company offering state-of-the-art Israeli technology?''
