Abstract
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is one of the world''s oldest licence fee supported public service broadcasting organisations founded in the UK in 1922. In the 2000s it faces the challenges of a rapidly changing broadcasting and media industry environment. The case takes a chronological approach beginning with the BBC''s origins and history which are integral to its culture and its place in British broadcasting, and then traces the evolution of the broadcasting industry and the BBC''s role within it as it moves from being a state monopoly to one of many players in an industry rapidly shifting due to factors such as new technologies, globalisation and deregulation. Major issues facing the BBC are sustaining its mission and role as a public broadcaster, how it can position itself in the marketplace against increasing competition and change of culture and organisational structure as it moves and restructures to face the new multimedia world of the twenty first century. This case was updated March 2006.
