This is the second of a three-case series (301-053-1 to 301-055-1). In June 1997 more than 50 Swiss electricity utilities, which had pooled their interests in diAx Holding AG, and US-based telecommunications company SBC Communications Inc founded the joint venture diAx AG to enter the fixed network telephony business in Switzerland. The B case focuses on the company situation three months before the liberalisation. Given the varying progress the company had made with regard to building the backbone network, negotiating the interconnection terms with the incumbent Swisscom, establishing the billing system and call centres etc, the management team has to decide if - as previously planned - it will enter the market by January 1, 1998 or if it should delay the market entry and risk that the competitor NewTelco/Sunrise reaps the rewards of being the first alternative service provider on the Swiss telecommunications market.
