Abstract

This case study highlights some of the key issues for classroom discussion. After stalling for ten years the UK joined the ERM at the end of 1990. This suggests that after years of doubt the government had accepted that fixed exchange rages were on balance better for economic growth than the alternative of allowing the pound to float. Since then the ERM has suffered a major crisis and the issue of exchange rate policy is now back at the centre of economic debate.
