Abstract
The financial services industry is undergoing unprecedented change, consolidation and convergence. Many national industry structures are already largely in place and those firms left behind will find they have a decreasing range of future options. The case reviews the global markets in banking, insurance, fund management and securities and contains eight tables and five appendices providing students with information and data regarding industry size, growth trends and global rankings. The challenge implicit in the case is to discuss and understand the need for explicit growth strategies, including mergers and acquisitions, to create both the scale and organisational capabilities required for survival. Specifically, the teaching note leads the class towards a view of the likely end-game, the requirements in terms of managerial and other capabilities, changes to industry structure and the need for totally integrated hybrid corporate and business level strategies.
