Abstract
Thawte Consulting (PTY) Ltd began in December 1995 as a one-man operation. In less than four years, it had grown to capture over 40% of the global market share in Digital Certificates used for security authentication over the Internet. It has offices in America and South Africa as well as representatives in over 20 countries worldwide. The case focuses particular attention on the owner-president of Thawte who has been the driving force within the company. His interest in encryption technology led him to manufacture and begin selling encryption-secured web server software in 1996. The case study also looks at the culture within Thawte as well as human resource management matters.
