Abstract

The case describes the changes occuring in the air travel industry over the past twenty years. It focuses on scheduled passenger travel and the companies, or their operations that serve this part of the market. It attempts to present a global perspective, describing the events in key markets: USA, Europe and Asia Pacific. The teaching objectives that can be achieved are: (1) broader environmental analysis of the air industry (PEST); (2) analysis of industry structure; (3) understanding forces for change; and (4) identifying key strategic issues for airlines, now and into the future. Understanding and analysis could be enriched by using the information in this case together with that supplied in the case ''The Future'' (300-016-1).
