Abstract

Throughout the 1990s, Japanese manufacturers had dominated the global market of fax machines. By 1998, alternative forms of messaging, like Internet Fax and PC Fax, had been gaining ground, and global competition from American, Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers were stepping up. But all these seemed to pose little threat to Japanese fax machine manufacturers. This case is designed to be used with the Harvard Business School case ''The Japanese Facsimile Industry in 1990'' (9-391-209).
