The case abstract is as follows: Remploy was set up in 1945 with Government funding to provide supported employment for severely disabled people. Its activities, organisation and governance have developed over the years to meet stakeholders'' needs. Remploy employed increasing numbers of disabled people in factories up to the late 1970s, when pressures on Government expenditure necessitated reductions in job opportunities for disabled people. The company intensified efforts to cut net employment costs, through reorganisation, trade changes and investment to widen the range of work that disabled people can do. More recently, Remploy has responded to funding pressures and social change - including pressures to provide jobs in the wider community - by establishing ''sheltered placements'' in service sector organisations.
