Abstract
This case describes the challenges faced by a human resource manager, Pat Brown, in her first international assignment. Although she has substantial experience in human resource management at her parent US corporation, in her position as Director of Human Resources at a German subsidiary she faces additional layers of cultural, legal, and ethical complexity. The issues that she must address include insider trading, protection of intellectual property, discrimination, hiring and discharge of employees, and attorney-client privilege. The case illustrates that, to be successful in the global economy, a successful manager must be able to: (1) recognise legal issues that are embedded in business decisions; (2) communicate with attorneys and make legal decisions (for example, whether to settle a lawsuit) in light of an attorney''s legal analysis, and (3) make business decisions in an environment of legal complexity and uncertainty. This case was sponsored by the Indiana University CIBER Case Collection.
