Abstract
The case contains information about both the parent company, News Corporation and Star TV, a wholly owned subsidiary. It highlights significant macro environmental factors, such as various government attitudes to satellite television and a range of macro economic statistics, as well as a review of competitor and industry activity which students can use in order to draw conclusions about the future options that Star TV might consider. The teaching objectives are relatively wide and include; (1) the position and aspirations of News Corporation in relation to the global multi media industry; (2) corporate strategy issues, including parenting, portfolio management and organising mode; (3) the business strategy options congruent with overall objectives and the prevailing environment; and (4) identification of stakeholders and the need to manage relations and the matching of industry key success factors with organisational capabilities. It is recommended that the case be used towards the end of a strategic management course, as the range of issues will require students to understand and appreciate the whole range of corporate and business strategy options.
