Abstract

This is the second of a three-case series (398-105-1 to 398-107-1). It describes the changing environment that existed between 1989 and 1995 as Poland established a market economy. HTS were then faced with an economic and political environment, changing technologies, changing management practices and changing markets. The case therefore provides the reader with a forum for debate about the many facets of change affecting HTS and strategies for survival initially and later for adaptation to the demands of a market economy. Issues of corporate governance, incentives and restructuring are also addressed within the case which was effectively a microcosm of the changes taking place within the wider Polish environment. The issues to be debated could also apply to any emerging market.
