Abstract

This case discusses problems that young graduates probably face when they have to enter the business environment. They can choose between a corporate career and going on their own. This case shows one option of going on your own; franchising. The case describes franchising at McDonald''s. It goes from the selection process to the training program and managing the restaurant, containing all details and questions that may be interesting for prospective franchisees. This case was prepared to serve as a basis for class analysis of the pros and cons of franchising. The most appropriate way to present the case is role-playing. One team plays the role of a franchiser and tries to justify the actions of McDonald''s corporation. The other team represents a potential franchisee, for example a young graduate student, willing to open a business, who is thinking of taking on a McDonald''s franchise. This case was sponsored by the Indiana University CIBER Case Collection.
