Abstract
This case describes a manufacturing organisation employing about one hundred people. The company has successfully grown over the last thirty years. For the last five years it has been run by an MD-part owner without any formal strategy at all. The new Production Director wants to formulate a strategy for his manufacturing operation. The case has been specifically designed so that it can be read by students, coming to the case for the first time, and used by the lecturer within a one-hour period. The case is intended to reinforce and develop the following key points from a session on Operations strategy: (1) the concept of order winning and order qualifying criteria; (2) the decision areas embraced by operations strategy; and (3) the practical difficulties of formulating operations strategy.
