The UK outbound tour operating sector has grown enormously in size and complexity since its inception in the 1950s. Recent years have been characterised by fierce competition, increasing levels of concentration and by a levelling off in the growth rate. This case traces the history of the sector, identifies the major players and outlines the major environmental influences. The learning objectives are: to consider the size, complexity and historical development of UK outbound tour operations; and to analyse the current structure of the sector; to identify the environmental factors and trends affecting the sector.
