Abstract
This is the first of a two-case series (397-056-1 and 397-057-1). This case focuses on the issues facing a company in the highly competitive civil aviation industry in China. China Eastern Airlines'' senior management made a number of strategic decisions in the early 1990s in order to build a base for further expansion and competitive advantage. This case discusses the specific change that took place in order to achieve their goals of ''Safety, Punctuality, Service and Profitability''.
