Abstract

The case study is based upon a medium sized UK building society (US, home loans) and its task and remote environment. The case provides information concerning the scope and operations of the society, the factors which influence the demand for mortgages, changing customer and competitive conditions, the supply of funds and competition for funds and the relative performance of the society. The case concludes with a summary of a scenario for the longer term development of the UK that has implications for the environment in which building societies are operating. The case can be used to develop analysis of the task and remote environment, understanding of some of the complexity and uncertainty presented by an environment, understanding of how change in the environment may have profound implications for an industry and a particular organisation, and practice in the assessment and use of scenarios.
