Abstract
In less than a decade, Novell became a worldwide presence with offices in 33 countries, employing approximately 8,500 people. From its early years, Novell''s president envisioned the company as a global organisation. This case describes a 17-year period (1978-1994) during which Novell grew to become an international presence in the information technology (IT) industry. This case presents four summary themes that describe Novell''s international growth: (1) The Global Product describes Novell''s networking software programs that are designed for a worldwide market; (2) The Entrepreneur portrays the man who envisioned, designed, and promoted Novell''s products and the company; (3) The Global Business Plan outlines the company''s worldwide strategy; and (4) The Challenges of Retaining Ownership and Markets presents the problems of counteracting software piracy, creating a unified global organisation, developing international managers, and facing severe competition in the volatile IT industry. This case was sponsored by the Indiana University CIBER Case Collection.
