Abstract
Under what circumstances should the law seek to circumscribe artistic statements? Based upon an attempt to prosecute a rap record by the group NWA in England in 1991, this case examines the line between artistic expression and pornography. It seeks to establish where that line should be drawn, in particular with regard to material which many people, especially women, find deeply abhorrent. This is a highly contentious and provocative case. Provided it has been carefully read and digested by the students it will provide the basis for a very intensive case study session for one seminar.
