Abstract
This is a sequence of seventeen concise case studies illustrating the need to position robots, ''tubes'', management information systems, where they can actually add value to the business. In reality they often cause so much friction among the stakeholders that a £7 million-funded system collapsed in three days; an unfriendly robot in a car park caused £1.5 million losses per year. Another set of robots so confused an investment decision that the authorities invested £250,000 in one Scottish Island Fire Appliance Service replacing what was a dog kennel in another comparable Scottish Island. This set of cases was inspired by the work of Zuboff when she observed that there were some simple but effective rules to apply when introducing computer mediation to work. The material can fill a two-hour management workshop for undergraduates or postgraduates.
