Abstract

The Iskra Stevci factory produces electric power meters for both industrial, commercial and residential applications. Various models are sold, primarily to utilities in Europe, based upon customer specifications. Complete meter sets are also sold to joint venture partners in the Far East and Asia. The factory manager has just reviewed a report showing the sales performance for the first four months of the current year, where actual sales exceed forecasted sales. This is normally a pleasant experience that all firms would like to occur on a routine basis. However, Iskra Stevci''s seasonal peak period is approaching, which consists of the summer months. Historically, the firm has hired an additional 200 temporary workers to support the heavier summer production period. However, is this appropriate for the future given the company''s increased sales? What should the plant manager do regarding the size of the workforce required to meet the anticipated sales increase? This case was sponsored by the Indiana University CIBER Case Collection.
