Abstract

This is the second of a two-case series (696-034-1 and 696-035-1) which describes a UK-based company making bulk packing for the food, supermarket, drink and tobacco industries. Cartons are made from heavy duty card, and packed flat. A three stage process (Cut, Print, Fold and Glue) is used. The main market requires rapid response to call-offs against long-term contracts. Building upon Parkins Packaging (A) (696-034-1) this case presents a real example of batch scheduling using Johnson''s algorithm, and the Campbell-Dudeck-Smith variation. A week''s schedule of 14 batches is given, and the data permits the application of a variety of scheduling rules. The Campbell-Dudeck-Smith method gives a very good schedule. The case will stand alone, or may be used after Parkins Packaging (A) (696-034-1). The quantitative data is common to both cases.
