Abstract

First of a two case series. A church-related university with 5,900 students faces increasing competition from government operated universities and community colleges and from other independent colleges and universities. The university is slow to react to these changes in the external competitive environment. The university is currently having shortfalls in projected enrolment and is facing financial pressures due to unbalanced budgets. The university's business school is trying to achieve AACSB accreditation despite budget cutbacks that are hampering its efforts to meet the research requirements of the AACSB. The business school faces the additional problem that it is the only professional school in a university dominated by a liberal arts culture that is not very sympathetic to the needs of a professional school of business.
