Abstract

The case describes the growth and decline of the Meekel family venture in the Netherlands. Starting as a traditional dairy, the business was transformed in a major strategic move into a delivery supplier of all kinds of fresh and other products for company and other cafeterias. With competition from larger companies increasing and a weak bargaining power with customers, the business survived largely due to the long and hard hours put in by the owner-manager, Harry Meekel. Problems with cash flow, personnel and the termination of a favourable site lease precipitate a crisis, and Harry Meekel had to decide whether to continue the business or sell out to a competitor. There is also a supplement to the case (395-118-4).
