Abstract
The case describes the successful discovery, development and first implementation of a new lube processing solvent in EXXON. It illustrates many facets of strategic R & D/innovation of a new cost-reducing process in a mature industry in one of the leading corporations in the oil and chemicals industry, in which units from three countries participated. It may be used with the IBUPROFEN case (395-126-1) to illustrate underlying similarities and differences between internal process and product innovations. It may also be compared with cases which illustrate corporate failures at technological innovation.
