Abstract
The role of a recently elected county sheriff is examined within the framework of a 75,000 population county which contains a major university. This new sheriff is attempting to introduce a more professional approach to law enforcement including the upgrading of departmental human resources, better equipment, an updated communications system, and eventually the availability of new jail facilities. The incumbent sheriff is fostering stronger interrelationships with federal, state, county and city law enforcement agencies. The following are examined: departmental relationships, departmental objectives, organisation structure, personnel, administration functions, facilities and equipment, and the financial administration of the department.
