Abstract

This case covers a challenging multinational strategic information system development. After an initial information system had failed, a split site development team was established (in London and California), leading to the successful development of a system to facilitate computer supported co-operative work (CSCW). The case examines stakeholder viewpoints and roles throughout the organisation. The case also highlights formal versus informal system development and communication approaches, in the context of change management. The core system covers marketing and business development functions for an engineering and project management company, but the lessons learned relate to a wide range of IS development and implementation situations. Teaching objectives are to present a case which will enable students to develop their abilities to appraise and discuss the information system development and implementation process in a broad practical context. This appraisal should cover the strategic, tactical, methodological, communications and management perspectives.
