Elements of the broad external environment are considered such as slot allocation at London Heathrow Airport, the International European and UK regulatory systems, and major air routes and airports. The competitive environment is analysed through a consideration of the major competitive airlines, the Channel Tunnel, and the influence of governments on competitors. Information is also presented covering the internal environment of British Midland, including the airline''s balance sheet and profit and loss statement, route system, organisation structure, history and fleet details. The case enables students to analyse the internal and external environment of British Midland with a view to setting objectives and a strategy for the future development of the airline.
