Abstract
The sector of small household appliances constitutes a world market in which critical mass can be attained only by manufacturers which distribute on a large scale. In this market, the SEB Group has moved from the fifth to the third rank through the acquisition in 1989 of Rowenta, a German firm controlled by American interests. This case study describes the business sector, the organisation of the SEB Group, its products, its markets and its strategy. It outlines the circumstances of the acquisition of Rowenta, the opportunities that this expansion presents to the Group, and the problems to be resolved in the integration of this new subsidiary.
