Abstract

Waste Management International plc (WMI) aims to be the world leader in offering comprehensive environmental services to industry, government and, residential customers. Faced with a recession in Europe, WMI is considering how to expand in the Asian marketplace. The case provides details on the Hong Kong Chemical Waste Treatment Center, one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the region. The project is nearing completion. Greg Feutril senior VP for Asia, needs to develop a strategic plan for the Asian region. The objectives are: 1) To explore the strategic options in the Asian marketplace for a global competitor in a highly complex industry; 2) To illustrate the notion of 'global know-how, local presence' as the underlying theme of a successful global strategy; 3) To highlight the issues in doing business with government authorities and 4) To illustrate the process of assessing market opportunities.
