Abstract

This is the second of a two part case series (393-015-1 and 393-016-1). The objective of the case is to allow users to analyse a small firm decision and thereafter define information needs and determine sources for that information. The decision context is one of market research: a small building firm is about to undertake a housing development but is unsure of the type and style of housing unit required by potential purchasers. The case illustrates the difficulties of small firm decision making. In particular as much of the information required is not often available from documented sources, it has to be put together from a number of disparate sources using a variety of channels. The case also provides the opportunity of evaluating the firm''s more general problems and undertaking a SWOT analysis as a precursor to prioritising issues for management attention.
