Abstract

This ''country note'' provides a general background to the three case studies Furnel International (393-054-1 & 393-055-1), Poznan Pipe and Wire Works (393-057-1), and Huta Czestochowa (393-056-1). It describes the economic reforms introduced in Poland in 1990, often known as the "Balcerowicz Plan''. This ''shock therapy'' approach - including the overnight repeal of most price supports, suspension of subsidies, and the fixing of the zloty exchange rate in relation to convertible currencies - was considered by many experts to be the most ambitious transition program in all of Eastern Europe.
