CEO-President, and Chairman of Invacare, A Malachi Mixon, III only had $10,000 when he managed to buy Invacare from Johnson & Johnson for $7.8 million in 1979. Earnings that year were $100,000 on sales of $19 million with 350 employees and the only product manufactured was wheel-chairs. Invacare was unranked in the industry as being only a minor player. In 1993, Invacare is ranked number one in the industry and has over 2,330 employees manufacturing a full range of home medical equipment. Invacare has manufacturing plants in Mexico, New Zealand, England, Germany, France and Canada, as well as in the USA. In December 1993, Invacare had 11 manufacturing plants, 28 warehouses and distribution centers throughout the world. With the 1993 health care crisis, this case on the home medical equipment manufacturing industry raises many issues that need to be discussed. This case is useful in finance, policy, production, marketing and entrepreneurship classes.
