Abstract

This case describes the strategies adopted by General Motors in the development and production of the new Saturn car in the late 1980''s. The case provides a framework for discussing the concurrent engineering/ simultaneous engineering product development strategies which emphasize teamwork, quality management, manufacturing and marketing strategies in the light of GM''s corporate objectives, its position in the industry, and the general economic environment. This analysis can be compared with the actual performance of the GM Saturn production system since 1990, when the first car was launched.
