Abstract
The case charts the meteoric rise of B & C from, essentially a family-based investment trust focused on shipping, to a world leader in financial services with a capitalisation of over two billion GB Sterling. This growth was accomplished within a three to four year period and necessitated a complete structural change away from shipping to financial services. Problems of controlling growth and structural change are highlighted throughout the case as are the financial and human resource management implications. These become particularly relevant in a period of turbulent change such as the stock market crash and help illuminate the role and power of the chief executive. Awareness of the importance of communication systems, financial control systems and information systems become critical. In addition, there is a (B) case (392-062-1).
