Abstract
The case study traces the attempts by Elders 1XL (Fosters Lager) to acquire Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Plc. It highlights the methods of attack and defence adopted by the companies. It juxtaposes the chief executives throughout the battle and attempts to illuminate their respective effects on strategy and structure. Inevitably it delves into the relative characteristics and distinctive competences displayed by each and the effect these have on the outcome of the battle and long-term future of the companies. In addition it raises the question of the use of defence methods such as "poison pills" and "debt restructuring" etc. whilst also examining the sourcing of funds to feed acquisition.
