Abstract

The case focus is upon the dynamics and politics of conflict generation and settlement. An arbitrator was appointed to resolve a long running bitter dispute about job evaluation gradings. Readers follow how the arbitrator sets about the investigation and his attempts at conflict resolution. The case illustrates tensions which arose from the decision to re-structure the organisation and implement a pay structure based upon a job evaluation exercise and a concurrent pay survey without proper employee consultation and participation. The consequential strife in the union/management relationship led to a situation close to anarchy and the manner in which these events affected the organisation is revealed as the case unfolds. Because there are separate but related sections to the case this allows readers to formulate their responses to the events presented and consequently compare and contrast them with the actual decisions made by the arbitrator.
