Abstract
At first reading this case is about an organisation with an administrative systems problem. The case provides a vehicle for introducing the construction and interpretation of data flow diagrams, the design of a relational database and the construction of a simple property records system providing management information. However, the company also faces serious competition which it is ill prepared to counter. Facing the competition is a higher priority than tackling the property records system. There is a role for IT (information technology) in this competitive situation, and the corporate strategy adopted will have a direct influence on the design of the property records system and the selection and implementation of other IT systems. Hence, although the case is about a small business, it demonstrates that a small business needs an integrated corporate and technology strategy as much as a large business, and that the potential for IT in many small service organisations is high. A supplement ''692-021-4'' is available to accompany this case.
