Abstract
This supplement is to accompany the case ''692-023-1''. The abstract of the case is as follows: This case is suitable for use in group discussion and small group presentation or each question can be used for individual assignments. It is primarily targeted at post-graduate and vocational business courses, such as MBA or similar, although it can be used on undergraduate business studies courses. It is about a market research agency with no IT (information technology) professional expertise which adopts IT in a piecemeal fashion and slowly becomes dependent upon it. The case looks at the development of the organisation and its changing IT needs over a three year period. Material is provided to enable students to look at how the organisation should develop and adopt an appropriate IT strategy; IT selection and implementation procedures; and operations and data management procedures. It also illustrates the problems and opportunities arising as a sophisticated multiuser system evolves from user demand in an environment still without in-house IT professional expertise. The scenario is a classic one with which many small firms will identify.
