Abstract

The case describes the process whereby the local authority of South Tyneside became involved in tourism and the nature of its tourism development strategy. It presents an account of activities undertaken on an annual basis and explores objectives underlying the programme. There is a summary of progress made and future plans are considered. Attention is also given to the allocation of responsibilities within the Metropolitan District Council and the relationship between the local authority and other organisations which play a role in tourism administration, marketing, and development in the district.
