Abstract

SWS is a small company manufacturing and marketing a range of special surface coatings designed to give long term preservation, protection and decoration to both internal and external building surfaces and components. Established in the early 1960''s, the company had concentrated totally on the UK market and had grown steadily until the early 1970''s when, facing a depressed home market and rising crude oil prices, the managing director, Stewart Wales, decided to enter the export market in Nigeria. In 1975, however, the Nigerian government subjected the company''s products to import controls, but the resultant "gap" was filled by a sales drive in the Middle East.
