Abstract
The company, which publishes Portugal''s largest evening newspaper faces complete insolvency. The case traces the political, financial and marketing background to this situation and also indicates some of the technical, staffing and managerial problems in the way of recovery. Teaching objectives might include developing skills in identification, selection and analysis of various sources and forms of data for management, such as company financial or market research information, the need for sensitivity to political and competitive climates, the value of generating several alternative strategies as means of achieving viable long term objectives, eg for labour planning and marketing, and the need for developing both short-term and longer term financial and marketing plans which are mutually supportive.
