Abstract
A chief environmental health officer examines the role of his department and attempts to relate this to the work of other departments and the policies of the local authority. He is particularly concerned about the interaction between professional officers and technical assistants in planning the future activities of the department. The case is designed to be used in public policy and corporate policy classes to illustrate the issues and processes of public policy making and local authority management.
