Abstract
The reader is placed in the position of an adviser to a self employed partnership producing a range of iced cakes for special occasions. Faced with limited resources, a low level of marketing expertise and restricted ambitions, advice is sought on both the strategic and tactical aspects of development. The case could be described as typical of the situation facing the self employed starter, where skills are in production rather than ''business''. Suited to small business and general introductory courses.
