Abstract
An historical review from 1850 to 1965 analysing how Japan absorbed manufacturing technologies and later developed her own. The economic, social and political motivations that encouraged individuals, government officers and industrialists are historically analysed. The industrial, trade and research and development policies of the country that have taken shape during the last one hundred years will provide a policy guideline for developing nations of today. This note is used in an international business class in order to review extensively the mechanism of international technology transfer in general and the recipient''s conditions in particular.
