Abstract
The case involves an engineering dominated, loosely managed industrial scales manufacturer. Based on unscrutinised information (received from the Personnel Department) the Engineering Manager makes a debatable decision concerning the promotion of two salaried employees. Since there are no formal company guidelines, the effects due to a 30-day leave of absence cannot be weighted. The case has also "cover-up" implications and power structure overtones.
