Abstract
The case describes the strategy behind the establishment of Inmos by the British state owned National Enterprise Board. The formation of Inmos is a most unusual strategic move by a nation, to enter one of the fastest growing and dynamically changing electronic markets of the 1980''s, by backing a team of capitalistic entrepreneurs who are largely located in the USA. The case covers both the overall strategy of the National Enterprise Board and the detailed formative strategy and structure of the small entrepreneur led Inmos, against the background of a rapidly changing industrial environment, where extremely aggressive, dynamic and large competitors are intensely striving for world market dominance.
