Abstract
The note describes the key characteristics of the major segments of the international shipping industry and identifies the main trends that are occurring in the industry at the end of the 1970s. The strategies of leading participants are briefly outlined to allow students the opportunity to isolate the key factors for "success", this being measured in different ways for participants with different objectives, and to propose strategies which may be viable in the circumstances prevailing.
