Abstract
This note describes the development of the UK machine tool industry through the period 1960-1970. It describes the mergers and rationalisations that took place and the relationships between the UK industry and the machine tool industries of the other leading industrial nations. Technical developments in machine tools are briefly described. The purpose of the note is to allow students to identify the factors which influence the development of an industry which is of fundamental importance to the overall UK engineering industry. It provides a background for the Staveley Industries (A) case (374-114-2).
